Discovering Yoga & Meditation

Elisabeth Schramm

My first yoga class was through a continuing education program  in a high school gym almost 20 years ago – a gift from my husband.  My ‘mat’ at the time was an old towel and in spite of the less than ideal environment I knew that this practice was lovely. My next yoga experience was a beginner level class at Living Yoga & Health. I loved the gentle movement and the teacher’s messages of self-acceptance and self- compassion.  Walking home, I was aware of new sensations, lightness and ease in my body, and that my busy mind had calmed a little bit. Since then, yoga and meditation have been a gift and support through all parts of my life.

As a clinical social worker, I had thought for years that there must be some way of integrating yoga and meditation with my work and that teaching yoga would be a wonderful way of deepening my own practice..  In 2008 I participated in a year long Mindfulness in Clinical Practice program with Michael Stone and began to understand how this integration was possible.  I completed the yoga teacher training at Living Yoga & Health in Oct. 2012 and was delighted to be invited to teach there beginning in January 2013.

In my private therapy practice, I now introduce simple yoga and mindfulness practices that can be of benefit in coping with depression, anxiety and trauma.  These experiences can cause the mind to be pre-occupied with thoughts about the past and worries about the future. Yoga and meditation bring us more clearly into the present moment, allowing  for the possibility of calm and quiet, as well as resilience and acceptance when life’s difficulties and painful mind states arise. Further, these practices allow us to recognize habitual patterns of acting and reacting. I offer workshops at the studio with a focus on yoga and meditation for anxiety and depression.

Elisabeth Schramm has found a way to incorporate yoga right into her therapy sessions, to help clients who struggle with anxiety and depression. For more information visit her website, or visit the Contact page for her contact info.
